Free Pancakes!!

News No Comments »

This just in… Free pancakes at IHOP today.

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly two million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates. With your help, we hope to raise $1,000,000 for Children’s Miracle Network in 2009!

Happy National Pancake Day!

Amazon MP3 = Free Music

Advice 1 Comment »

Amazon.com is one of my favorite websites. They have everything from the latest novel to the latest music release to the latest piece of cutlery. One of Amazon’s newest additions is its MP3 download capabilities.

Through the Amazon MP3 Store, you can browse through millions of songs, and purchase completely DRM free music. The music is compatible with any music device and can be directly downloaded to iTunes or Windows Media Player. Using Amazon, you can find almost any song you are looking for. They also have a built in sampler for most music that will provide a 30 sec sample of the song before you download it. Most discs give you the option of purchasing the entire alum in MP3, or just buying a single song. The files can be downloaded without any additional software, but the Amazon MP3 Downloader is highly recommended. Don’t worry, this software is very simple and won’t try to take over your computer’s music. It simply downloads the music, files it on your computer, and does a really good job of doing it.

The best part of this whole site, however, is the Special MP3 Deals page. This page shows, not only special limited time pricing on select downloads, but also offers free music. Yeah, that’s right, I said FREE… and it’s legal. Check out the rightmost column on the deals page to see all the free music. Most of the specials last only daily, however, so get to it as soon as possible. You can even subscribe to the MP3 of the day through email.

If all this wasn’t enough for you, Amazon is currently offering 25 Days of Free Christmas Music:

Every day through December 25, we’re unveiling a new holiday song available to download free for a limited time. Check back daily to see what’s next.

So, go check it out. You can study later.

Free Quicken

News No Comments »

As college students, we’re notorious for doing a poor job at tracking our finances. Credit card companies know this, which explains why we there is so much credit card marketing directed at us.

Quicken Online is now free. This is a great way to track your finances for busy college students. Simply sign up for an account, type in your online account details, and Quicken Online will automatically compile and categorize your transactions. You can also get reports on how much you are spending per category, how much you are spending per payee, and what is your in/out cash flows.

It’s a great service – easy to setup and easy to use. I’d highly recommend it, especially if you don’t currently track your finances.

FREE Bike Lights

News, On Campus No Comments »

Although not much information is available online, I just rode by a large sign on Green Street announcing the offerings of “Light the Night”.

Tonight from 4:30-8:30pm at the Alma Mater you can get yourself a FREE Bike Light.

It is very important, if you are riding a bike at night, to have a light. It is dangerous for not only the rider but for passing vehicles for bikers to ride without a light at night.

So come by the Alma Mater tonight between 4:30 and 8:30 to get yourself a FREE light, and be safe.

Here at University of Illinois we are blessed with an amazing tradition of music. Our marching band is one of the oldest and best in the country. Illinois Loyalty, Oskee Wow Wow, and the Illinois Alma Mater “Hail to the Orange” all bring emotion and pride to alumni and current students alike.

Here is an archive of many of the traditional Illinois fight songs, all in MP3 format:
Marching Illini – Fight Songs

Three-in-One Lyrics

They’re all required listening – so giddy-up!

Illinois Perks: Netfiles (on your Desktop)

Advice No Comments »

At some point in your college career, you will need to share files between yourself and your peers. A great solution is Netfiles, 500 MB of online web storage for each Illinois student.

Some cool things about Netfiles: you can store files only for yourself, or you can share them with specific UIUC Netfiles users, or you can make them available on the public internet (available to any internet-enabled computer in the world).

Something that you may not know, however, is that you can mount your Netfiles directory as a drive on your computer. This means that just as you can save a file to your “C drive,” you can enable your Nefiles folder to be another drive letter like the “W drive.” This is done through an excellent program called WebDrive. Check out all the information on using WebDrive with your Netfiles account on the CITES Netfiles Documentation.
