Band Member Reflects on Rose Bowl

Opinions No Comments »

As a member of the Marching Illini, I have been able to be very active in Illinois athletics. This season, that included a trip to Pasadena to perform in the Rose Bowl Game. The members of the band put a lot of time and effort into creating an exciting environment at the games this season and deserved the trip just as much as the players did.

We only needed to polish our halftime show “Stairway to Heaven” because we had already learned it for a previous Illinois football game. The band met in Champaign on Thursday, December 27 for rehearsals and meetings. The purpose on these rehearsals was not only to perfect our halftime show, but to build up stamina for the five mile Rose Bowl parade.

Given the short scheduling time-frame, the trip arranged for the Marching Illini was planned very well. Our schedule always had us going somewhere and always had us doing something; this wasn’t a bad thing though. The band spent four nights in California, and during this time we had two rehearsals, marched in three parades, made appearances at three pep rallies, performed our pregame and halftime show in the Bowl, and spent a half day in both Disneyland and Universal Studios.

On New Years Day the band woke up at to 4:00 am to eat breakfast and leave for the beginning of the parade route. Marching in the parade was an amazing experience. I have never marched a route as long or as well attended as the Rose Bowl parade. I was amazed to see and hear so many Illinois fans cheer us on while we marched past them.

When the parade was over, lunch was waiting for us. We all went to an open park and had a picnic with some of the other bands that had performed in the parade. During this time floods of text messages came to the other band members and me and from friends saying they had seen us in the parade. After lunch, buses took us to the stadium.

Outside of the stadium there was a pep rally for Illinois fans that we stopped at and played a few songs. After that, we finally headed into the stadium. Pregame went off without a hitch (as far I could tell from the field), and our halftime show seemed to be very well received by the crowd.

Just like all the other fans at the game and at home, the Marching Illini experienced that game with a multitude of emotions. Hopes stood high even in the fourth quarter as the band and the Illinois fans chanted, “we believe.” Even with the Illinois loss I was very happy to see the game in person and watch our amazing team compete in the first Rose Bowl of my lifetime.

As we left the stadium that night some University of Southern California fans said “good game” and told us that our show sounded great. Even the next day when we visited Santa Monica pier, a couple overheard us talking about the game and complemented our performance of “Stairway to Heaven.”

I would like to thank not only the team for a great season, but also The University of Illinois Athletics Department. They accommodated the band’s requests all season, especially for the Rose Bowl. They recognize Marching Illini as a huge factor in creating an exciting environment for the team and their fans. This atmosphere helped produce the success we had this season. The athletics department made this trip happen for the Marching Illini.

Illinois’ Magic Season Finally Ends

Sports No Comments »

The 94th Rose Bowl ended the 2007 Illinois football season with a loss to the University of Southern California 49-17. The Illini came into the game as an intense underdog, as usual. The most integral concept for every Illinois fan is to believe. That is exactly what we did. We believed that we could win this game, because we saw everything we have been through over the past years and everything we accomplished this year, and we saw that anything was possible. The problem however, was that the Illinois football team didn’t play as they could have. The Illinois offense was playing at a mild level and was simply defeated by the USC defense. I could go on and one about the details that costs us the game, but I won’t. We all saw it, and it’s over.

What we need to do, is take a step back and look at this game from a broader prospective. The Illini played in the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl. Yes, it’s still a big deal. We have moved from a one-win team, to a BCS contender. The Illini have brought themselves back into the national spotlight and it will only get better from here. Next year’s team will be even better and with the recruiting of Ron Zook, it is possible that the Illinois legacy will continue for a long time as a success.

Ron Zook stated at the conclusion of the 2008 Rose Bowl: “When we come back here next year, we are gonna do a lot better than we did today.”

This season has been most definitely magical and I encourage all Illini fans to stay proud, for it is this pride and dedication that makes Illinois the legendary university that it is. So lets put our hands around each other’s shoulders and join together:

Hail to the Orange,
Hail to the Blue,

Hail Alma Mater,

Ever so true (so true).

We love no other,
so let our motto be

Victory, Illinois, Varsity!

Ron Zook: Your 2007 Coach of the Year

News, Sports No Comments »

Congratulations to Illinois’ own Mr. Ron Zook, for winning the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. The winner in each division was chosen using a combination of fan votes and votes received from members of the 2007 Coach of the Year Selection Committee. By winning, Liberty Mutual will donate to the charity of Ron’s choice and also donate to the University’s alumni association. Ron’s three year turnaround of the Illinois program proved his ability.

And in just three seasons, the coach’s belief has produced results. The Illini finished 6-2 in the conference and nine overall victories earned the school its first BCS bowl berth since the 2001 season. In November, the Illini traveled to Ohio, the state Zook grew up in, and upset the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The victory put the Illini on the national stage and stamped a marquee win on their bowl resume. – Mike Theodore (The Daily Illini)

Congratulations again to Coach Ron Zook. Be sure to watch Coach Zook lead the Illini (13) against the University of Southern California (7) at the 94th Annual Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca on January 1, 2008. The game is scheduled for kickoff at approx. 4:10 Champaign time.

So you got your tickets, now it’s time to actually get to Pasadena.

To make it easy, the UI Alumni Association is offering travel packages including a flight and hotel room. Click here to check out the Alumni Association Official Bowl Tour.

For those of you who want to do the work yourself, you’re going to have many decisions to make. Your first option seems to be driving or flying. For those of you road-trippers, you’re going to have a long ride on your hands. According to Google Maps, Champaign to Pasadena is a little under 2,000 miles. Accoring to the NHTSA, the average mpg in the US is 24.7 and the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.00. So a one way trip to Pasadena will cost you around $243 in gas alone. The trip itself will take about one day and five hours. Click here for detailed driving directions. The average price for a hotel in the Pasadena area is around $250 for one adult in two nights, according to Travelocity. If you want to fly, the average price for a one-way flight from Willard Airport to Burbank Airport for one adult is $500, according to Travelocity.

Please keep in mind that these numbers are all estimates provided to give you an idea of the travel costs. The Quad is not a travel agency and in no way should you rely solely on our suggestions. Illini to Play in 2007 Rose Bowl

Sports No Comments »

It finally happened. The stars aligned for the first time this season in favor of the Illini. Thanks to a season marked with upsets, the Big Ten slide up the rankings yet again to place Ohio State in the National Championship. As second place in the Big Ten, the Illini were next in line for the Rose Bowl. As just announced on national television, the Illini will face the University of Southern California in this year’s Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on January 1, 2008.

Despite having two conference losses, Southern California clinched the Pac-10 with a victory over UCLA and will be headed back to Pasadena. With the Rose Bowl’s other selection, it will replace Ohio State with Illinois to give the Rose Bowl its traditional Big Ten vs. Pac-10 matchup.

Illinois’ last visit to Pasadena was in 1984 when they lost to UCLA. The Illini have made a total of four appearances in the Rose Bowl with three wins. With this year’s Rose Bowl, the Illini snapped a five-year bowl game drought. The 2007 Illini finished the regular season with a 9-3 record. If you forgot by now, let me reiterate: Illinois is playing in Pasadena… January 1st… USC… ROSE BOWL!

Congratulations Coach Zook and the rest of the team, this honor is much deserved. To show your Illini pride, I encourage all students and fans to wear orange as often as possible from now until game time (it’s alright, laundry is not important right now). Go Illini!

So you want to get tickets and watch the Illini in Pasadena? From ticket to travel info, let The Quad be your guide! Look for our Bowl travel special tomorrow, Monday 12/3.

Football Update

Sports 1 Comment »

The football season is almost over and for the first time in 5 years, the Illini will be watching the BCS Selection show on December 3rd to see where they will spending their New Year’s. The Illini are currently in 15th in the BCS after last week’s series of upsets. So what bowl will the Illini be in? The Capitol One Bowl looks like a sure bet for the Illini. However, the Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl have quickly become possibilities. How could the Illini get into the Rose Bowl you ask? Well, if Missouri, or West Virginia lose this week, Ohio State will be in either first or second place which puts them in the National Championship. With the Buckeyes fighting for it all, the 2nd in the Big Ten Illini will fill the spot in Pasadena. So go Oklahoma and Pittsburgh!
