You often hear that Illinois is a “Research I Institution” – but what does that really mean?

Research I university was a category previously used by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education to indicate those universities that engaged in extensive research activity … The Foundation replaced their single classification system with a multiple classification system in their 2005 comprehensive overhaul of the classification framework, so that the term “Research I university” is no longer valid.

Oops … I guess we shouldn’t be using “Research I University” as a title anymore. We are, however, still highly ranked under the new rating system. We are classified as “RU/VH: Research Universities (very high research activity)”
